Six teams arrived at start, but numbers were down due to illness and possibly finding out that Chris Plummer was on the Tx !!! One new very welcome competitor making a return was Min Standen.
Signal was heard OK at the start giving a bearing of circa 320 degrees. Most teams transferred the bearings onto the Aylesbury map thinking it may be well up this map. At 8pm, the signal near Cadmore End was quite a lot stronger, giving a possible distance of another 5 to 8 miles. The third transmission, down the hill from Stokenchurch, was very weak and we proceeded back up to Stokenchurch and, after much searching in various car parks, arrived at the nature reserve area on Beacon Hill. On arrival, found the vehicles of Peter Lisle and Steve Stone (plus Mr Plummer's). On legging it down the escarpment, local walkers confirmed that strange people with little boxes were seen at the bottom of the hill.
The next transmission came on and nearly blew the Rx apart. After running around the fenced area, found that all the fences were radiating (possibly 1 to 3 miles of them). With much searching and climbing trees etc. started to work out that the fences appeared to radiate every quarter wavelength so, after searching the first two, managed to find Chris who then confirmed that he had spent two nights linking said fences to create havoc. All the other teams appeared on site and, one by one, tracked Chris down.
Brian Bristow.
Further notes from the operator:
As it happens, 3 teams were within 10 feet of me at 20:35, but none could find the way into the brambles that I was in. After climbing over the aerial where it linked two fences together, and stamping the wood flat, saying 'The B*****d can't be in here its private' you all missed the tee off the fence, and forgot the golden rule ' If he can't be in the woods why not outside?'
Condolences to Bill on his Birthday (but he's still younger than me by 15.5 months), having climbed all the way up the hill from the Ridgeway path down on the plains at the base of the ridge.
Scars were received by all including me, from the vicous brambles, and barbed wire, but thanks for making an easy way out for me at the end.
Chris Plummer.
