Gage-Tyler Cup 2004 Round 5

21 July 2004

Nine teams started at this event, Tx operator was Colin Boyce, G4XWP, who has decided to move back up to DF land. Also at the start, we welcomed Bernard Poole; it was his first time out on DF for many years and we hope he will come again.

The signal at the start was fairly strong, suggesting Colin was around 8/10 miles at most away. Most teams travelled about that distance on a bearing circa 345. At the 8pm transmission, I only heard what appeared to be a faint noise on the band. Feeling Colin was back at the start, we then rushed back down the map. On discussions with John, we decided to go through Marlow and over the bridge to Bisham. It then came back to me that Colin had told me, 5 years before, of a good site by the church at Bisham, which we arrived at with 5 min to spare. Then Chris Plummer arrived to add that he had got a cross bearing near the church. With that confirmation, I quickly ran down the short path and found Colin inside the hedge he had talked about. Chris then came down with signal on and, after playing cat and mouse, he also found Colin. This, alas, means that he is still streets ahead of anybody else in the points (unless we can find some hidden rule about outsiders).

Seven teams managed to find Colin in the given time.

Brian Bristow.
