2014 Collier Cup round 5

01 August 2014

Five teams started this event with Bill on the Tx. The signal was quite wide and not that strong on my part. I plotted 270 degrees as an approx, I only got as far as 2 miles short of Golden Balls, which turned out to be a good spot as my 8pm signal went due south. 8:15 signal from south of Dorchester (on Thames) gave me a cross on the bend of the river and Lt Wittenham Woods. I was not sure which side of river to go to so I went to Long Wittenham to confirm. After parking up by church at Lt Wittenham, the signal said up that bloody hill! Like that grand old duke of York got to top of hill only to now say that the Tx was now down the hill in the woods towards the river!

I was rather surprised that only two teams found me. The two that did, got in quite quickly after arriving on site although Graham did wander off having been very close to me as soon as he arrived.

I saw Gary running up and down the field within about ten metres of my hide but he then vanished. I heard later that he had not brought a copy of the Oxford map and used a road atlas!

John was on site at the end but did not get in and Doreen (with neighbour Chris) were only a few hundred yards away.

The Tx was earthed to a long wire fence nearby and the antenna ran for about 500 feet straight into the wood, crossing two paths in the process.

We met at the Plough at Long Wittenham afterwards for pleasant drink in the drizzle.
